Wooden combs or balls are really useful tools for labour pain management for lots of birthing people. Holding and squeezing the comb or ball in the palm of your hand during contractions acts in a few powerful ways:
- Squeezing the comb or spiky ball sends non-painful sensory input to your nerves, spinal cord and your brain, which can override and reduce some of the pain signals from contractions. This is called "gate theory" - the sensation from the comb "closes the gate" to some of the sensation from your contractions, reducing pain.
- Having something in your hands during labour can help to distract your body and mind from discomfort.
- There are also acupressure points in the palms of your hands that can be activated by holding and squeezing the comb or ball, helping to reduce anxiety as well as pain.
The balls can also be used for massage or trigger point release, for rolling your feet over, and both the combs and balls can be used as sensory/ fidget tools, or for pain relief during other procedures!
Comb sold individually, balls sold in pairs (one for each hand!) - an excellent addition to your birth bag!
